California Law and Professional Ethics Course 2026

This online, California respiratory care practitioner (RCP)-specific ethics course focuses on the theories of ethical decision making as it applies to: Scope of practice, informed consent, confidentiality, discrimination, conflicts of interest, illegal or unethical acts, fraud, research, and more. California RCPs have a requirement for a course on California law and ethics. This course satisfies the requirement for the Respiratory Care Board of California.

The post-examination contains 30 questions. Successful completion requires a score of 70% or more on the post-examination. Participants will be allowed two attempts to pass the post-examination after completing the course.

  • Module 1: Differentiate between morals and ethics; distinguish between ethical problem, distress, and dilemma; identify the three components of an ethical problem; and identify the six steps in the analysis of an ethical problem.
  • Module 2: Identify and define deontological theories, teleological theories, and virtue ethics; and describe the benefits of evaluation in future decision-making. situations
  • Module 3: Define decisional capacity; differentiate between informed consent and implied consent; identify how informed consent is applied to minors and those who lack decisional capacity; and define and explain advance directives, to include living wills, power of attorney and do not attempt resuscitation/limitation of treatment orders.

California RCPs have a requirement for a course on California law and ethics. This course satisfies the requirement for the Respiratory Care Board of California.

This course will introduce and discuss basic ethical principles applicable to the delivery of healthcare and review the laws and regulations governing the practice of respiratory care in the state of California. After reviewing background information for each topic, the learner will apply the principles presented by studying scenarios and responding to questions that assess his/her mastery of the content. The learner will then document his/her content mastery by passing a summative post-examination to complete the course requirements.

Module 1: Components of Ethical Problems

At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to:

  • Differentiate between morals and ethics.
  • Distinguish between ethical problem, distress, and dilemma.
  • Identify the three components of an ethical problem.

The code sections you will review in this module come from the California Business and Professions Code, Division 2, Chapter 8.3 Respiratory Therapy, and California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Division 13.6, which contains the laws and regulations enforced by the Respiratory Care Board of California.

The video for this module is approximately 17 minutes in length. After completing the video, you will take a short quiz located in the credit submission area. The quiz will become available once the video has been completed. All questions must be answered correctly before moving on to the next module.

Module 10 Part 2: California Law and License Administration Violations

At the end of this presentation, the learner will be able to cite the requirements of the laws and regulations governing the practice of respiratory care in the State of California, including license administration violations. The code sections you will review in this module come from the California Business and Professions Code, Division 2, Chapter 8.3 Respiratory Therapy, and California Code of Regulations, Title 16, Division 13.6, which contains the laws and regulations enforced by the Respiratory Care Board of California.
