2025 AARC Explores - Pathway 7 - Spontaneous Breathing Trials in Critically Ill Adults

This presentation explores evidence-based strategies for ventilator liberation. Physiologic principles are outlined using historical context, readiness criteria, and SBT methods including T-piece, CPAP, and PSV. Findings from the GLOBAL WEAN study and current AARC clinical practice guidelines are summarized along with clinical tools for assessment including predictive indices like RSBI and airway occlusion pressure. At the end of this module clinicians will be able apply recent evidence to clinical practice to help reduce re-intubation risk through standardized, protocol-driven SBTs.

Presenter: Karsten J. Roberts, MSc, RRT, RRT-ACCS, FAARC, FNAP
