2015 Asthma Educator Certification Prep Course

This course assists clinicians in preparing for the Asthma Educator Certification (AE-C) examination offered by the National Asthma Educator Certification Board (NAECB) and is a general refresher course on asthma care. 

 

**Please note that all programs require the participant to view the entire program prior to taking the final quiz and obtaining a course certificate.**

 

Successful completion of this course requires achieving 70% or higher on the post-course test.

 

This course is approved for 10.5 CRCE by the AARC.

This course is approved for 10.5 CNE by the Ohio Nurses Association through 3/26/2017. (ONA #17988)

  • Identify key content areas covered by the National Asthma Education Certification Board (NAECB) examination
  • Identify key skills for asthma educators
  • Analyze current trends in the asthma epidemic
  • Identify how asthma presents and its underlying causes
  • Explain current “best” practice of pharmacologic management of asthma
  • Describe how asthma is diagnosed
  • Discuss the role of the peak flow meter in the ongoing assessment and monitoring of asthma
  • Compare and contrast obstructive and restrictive disease
  • Identify how to assure definitive and reproducible pulmonary function testing results
  • Compare the characteristics of different inhalation devices currently available and define patterns of acceptable inhalation technique for each.
  • Identify common asthma triggers
  • Compare and analyze techniques in the management of asthma triggers
  • Identify psychological, social, and cultural factors that affect adherents to asthma therapy
  • Discuss the expected self-management goals of asthma therapy
  • Explain four essential components of asthma management that must be met in order to achieve control of asthma
  • Describe mechanisms and processes to evaluate an asthma program
  • Identify common barriers to effective communication
  • Identify various questioning techniques
  • Identify the benefits to patient education and the impact of effective patient education on health outcomes
  • Identify barriers to effective learning
  • Describe strategies and techniques to improve my test-taking skills
