According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, asthma is one of the leading causes of school absenteeism in the United States. The respiratory therapist has a unique role in not only the diagnosis and treatment of asthma but also in helping patients and families develop good asthma self-management skills to prevent the negative impact of asthma, including school absenteeism. This presentation will discuss asthma and its impact on student absenteeism, the role of the AAP as a surveillance tool in school districts and the importance of students with asthma having an AAP on record.
